Summary
At the beginning of this strange domestic thriller written by the pseudonymous Hardy (After All I've Done), a dissatisfied housewife named Jewelann Jordan meets a surgeon and former classmate, Christian Campbell, at their 25th high school reunion. Campbell was the person who had broken her heart 17 years earlier.
Under the pen name Mina Hardy, New York Times best-selling novelist Megan Hart tells a convoluted story of domestic suspense. Hart's novel is one of the most popular books ever sold in the United States.
Put the blame on the alcohol, her troublesome son, her unstable marriage, or any of a thousand other things. When Jewelann Jordan attends her high school reunion, she has just one goal: to ensure that her high school crush, Christian Campbell, gets a clear picture of what he has been missing out on all these years. A late night, a hotel room, and a flame have been reignited and are now burning much hotter than before. What could go wrong here?
A fling that takes place during the reunion in a hotel room is enjoyable for one of the parties but not for the other. Back in Kettering, Ohio, where the couple resides, Jewelann takes care of her troublesome son Eli, who is 16 years old, as well as her domineering husband Ken, who is frequently away for work as a software troubleshooter.
It's not the first time Jewelann has kept a secret from her husband Ken, and she spent the night with Christian, so another one shouldn't be too difficult for her to keep. However, Christian unexpectedly shows up and seems determined to make Jewelann's life as difficult as possible in any way he can. Worse than that, it appears that he intends to win over Eli, her son, as well as win over her husband and become his buddy. Jewelann is determined to prevent Christian from destroying everything she has fought so diligently to keep safe, including her kid. Revenge isn't as good when it bites you back, but Jewelann knows this won't stop Christian.
To her utter shock, Christian showed up and informed her that Ken had just approved their carriage home to be rented out to Christian. Jewelann is terrified that her husband, Ken, will discover everything she has been hiding from him, ranging from her shopping addiction to her unresolved feelings for Christian. Jewelann's secrets include both of these topics. It will be difficult for readers to warm up to the whiny and superficial Jewelann, but as the story progresses and she learns some disturbing things about Ken and Christian, she becomes more sympathetic.
The plot moves at a glacial pace at first, but then it takes a bewildering number of unexpected turns that ultimately lead to a hurried but happy conclusion. Those who can handle melodrama on a high level should not continue reading.
