Review
Jason Rich, a troubled attorney, is the central character in this story. As the story takes place in the same fictional universe as the writer's other books, there will be references for fans of the writer's previous works. Taking advantage of other people's bad luck, attorney Jason Rich has made a fortune.
However, he has hit a rough patch since his recent divorce and time spent in rehab. The situation only worsens when he is called on to represent a client in a criminal case. His sister, Jana Waters. Waylon Pike, the boyfriend of his sister, confessed that he killed Dr. Braxton Waters, the husband of Jana Waters, after having an affair with her. He confessed first to a casual acquaintance, then to the police.
The police are now investigating whether the $15,000 Pike received for the murder came from Jana Waters, who had withdrawn this exact sum the day before, or from someone else. In Guntersville, most residents are convinced that Jana hired Pike to kill her husband.
Jana has plenty of enemies in town due to her drug use, affairs, and tendency to manipulate everyone in her inner circle. Is Jana responsible for killing her husband? There is some doubt in Jason's mind. He finds it difficult to believe his long-separated sister is innocent. Jana asks Jason to represent her despite the fact that he has no experience trying criminal cases.
In addition to the tearful pleas of his nieces, Nola and Niecy, whom he hasn't seen in years, he is moved to defend Jana by Tyson Cade, the local drug king who repeatedly exploited Jana by deferring payment of the $50,000 she owed him for his product. His main concern is not having Jana testify in her own defense, nor does he want his name mentioned during the trial.
As a result, he demands that Jason not accept the case, giving it to a less-motivated appointed attorney, or, if he accepts it, that he keep Jana off the stand. It would be impossible for a novice like Jason to overcome these hurdles; his only hope would be a miracle.
In the buildup to Jana's climactic trial, the book moves along at a smooth pace full of suspense and excitement. Misdirection drives the mystery, as Jason and the reader are led into some frustrating situations, making it all the more compelling. Despite describing Jason's trial strategy in detail Bailey avoids the tedious details of gathering the necessary information for his defense. Toward the end of the trial, a major but believable twist leaves the reader feeling that justice has been served.
